Internet was one such disruptive innovation which made a huge influence on various economic factors. 21st century has been tagged as the Information Age, due to the global penetration of Information & Communication Technology, all with the use of the internet. With the emergence of Social Media the outset of the 21st century and its viral growth in the last decade, it has become an important part of people's life today, all over the world. Majority of the internet users are online on social media for a considerable amount of hours every day. Growth of social media has been exponential in the last decade and projections show that the number of social media users will exceed 3.02 Billion in 2019. This study aims to show the statistics data concerning social media usage, pointing out the global character of this phenomenon. Further, it would showcase the influence of such a huge number of active users, on various economic areas. Social media changes the way companies carry out marketing and branding activities, the flow of information or news in the global scenario, international trade, public awareness, government or public administration transparency, employability or talent acquisition, etc. These socio-economic or micro-economic factors inevitably contribute to the macroeconomic factors of each country.
