[Does the "third mission of the university exist"? Measuring the unmeasurable]

Universities are in the business of teaching and research. Should they be doing anything 
else? Policies at various levels encourage universities to "engage with the public", 
"cooperate with the socio-economic environment", etc. Is this the same kind of activity 
that universities usually do, or is it fundamentally different? Is it even possible to 
establish an appropriate cross-national and cross-system uniform definition, and 
furthermore to operationalize reliable metrics and indicators? In this talk I will outline 
the advantages and disadvantages of the different theoretical and practical approaches and 
try to draw reasonable conclusions for the local context.
