Net Zero Cities Simulation: Policy Simulation of the Cities' Transition to Climate Neutrality

  • The simulation will immerse participants in a near-future decarbonization challenge set in a European city. They will explore the research-based future stories that highlight contested claims between the push for rapid decarbonization and the resistance that arises from perceived side effects such as energy poverty, high unemployment in former coal regions, threats to business competitiveness, or even inconvenience due to greenhouse gas emission reductions. In their role as city managers and key stakeholders, participants will negotiate and co-create new strategies to achieve climate neutrality without leaving anyone behind. They will face and creatively address the core trade-offs between the imperative to accelerate the green transition. They will respond to the needs and worldviews of skeptical or disengaged citizens:
  • "It felt real. I had to remind myself that it was just a simulation," recalled a participant. The simulation invokes emotions, encourages learning and knowledge sharing, and motivates collaborative action.
